Helping allergies with hypnotherapy in Fareham
In the UK approximately one in 4 of us suffer from an allergy of some kind. Current research suggests that this number is on the rise. It is estimated that around half of these sufferers are children.
It is not always possible to pinpoint exactly what is causing the rise in the number of people suffering from an allergy but it is know that we are increasingly being exposed to more pollution and chemicals including:
- Cigarette smoke
- Additives in our food
- Soaps, shampoos, lotions
- Washing detergents
- Increased use of antibiotics
Our modern lifestyle and hygiene habits can often mean that we’re not exposed to as much bacteria as we have been used to in years gone by which, in turn, can affect how much exposure we have to bacteria that can help build and strengthen our immune systems.
‘An allergy is a response within the body to a substance, which is not necessarily harmful in itself, but results in an immune response and a reaction that causes symptoms and disease in a predisposed person, which can cause inconvenience, or a great deal of misery’ – Allergy UK
If your allergy is mild enough you may not even be aware that you have it. An allergy will only become a problem for you when your sensitivity to an allergen is more severe and causes an allergic reaction. Your body’s immune system will then ‘over-react’ to whichever substance you are allergic too.
An allergic reaction can vary greatly from extremely mild so that you barely notice it too so severe that it can be life-threatening.
When your body detects an allergen it releases histamine. It is the release of the histamine which causes the symptoms of your allergic reaction such as:
- Itching skin
- Irritation of the eyes
- Discharge from your nose
- Shortness of breath
- Gastrointestinal disorders
In extremely severe cases the sufferer may experience anaphylactic shock (anaphylaxis). This type of reaction can worsen very quickly so always seek immediate medical attention and call the emergency services if you are unsure.
Allergies are caused by allergens. Allergens are found in common substances that we come into contact with as we go about our everyday lives. These include:
- Food – Eggs, milk and wheat
- Animals – Cats, dogs, horses birds
- Insect bites and bee/wasp stings
- Household chemicals
If you can avoid the food or substance that you are allergic too then you will be less likely to experience an allergic reaction. Of course, this is not always easy or even possible. If you know that you have a peanut allergy you can choose not to eat peanuts, for example. However, if you do not know the exact cause of your allergy it may not be possible to identify the substances you need to avoid.
These can be purchased over the counter or prescribed by your GP or medical adviser.
Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
Studies have shown that many allergic reactions can be triggered or worsened by high-stress levels. When we experience high levels of stress our bodies are less able to cope with allergens and our allergic reactions can increase. If this is the case for you then hypnotherapy will help you. If your stress levels are high or you are experiencing an increase in your allergy symptoms for no logical reason then there maybe psychosomatic reasons for your allergy.
Hypnotherapy can be used to help you to develop a more positive emotional state and this, in turn, stimulate your body’s immune system. Our specialist hypnotherapists will help you to relax and also to eliminate emotional triggers from any traumatic experiences in your past that may be contributing to your symptoms. Whether or not you have medication for your allergy, studies show that hypnotherapy is extremely effective in relieving the symptoms of allergies and reducing their unpleasant effects. Hypnotherapy will help you to feel calmer and more in control of your allergic reactions and help you to carry on with your life with less disruption to your daily routine.
