Are there any risks or side effects associated with hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is generally considered to be a safe form of therapy when performed by a qualified and experienced therapist. However, as with any form of therapy, there is a small risk of potential side effects, such as:
Headache or dizziness: Some people may experience a headache or dizziness after a hypnotherapy session, which usually passes quickly. The is exceptionally rare (we have only ever heard this from clients who have transferred to our practice from other hypnotherapists).
Fatigue: Some people may feel tired or sleepy after a hypnotherapy session.
Nausea: Some people may experience nausea or other stomach-related symptoms after a hypnotherapy session.
Anxiety or agitation: In rare cases, hypnotherapy may increase feelings of anxiety or agitation for some people. This should always be mentioned to your therapist at your next session.
False memories: Some people may develop false memories during hypnotherapy, although this is rare and can be avoided if the therapist is well-trained and follows ethical guidelines.
Worsening of symptoms: In rare cases, hypnotherapy may worsen symptoms instead of improving them. This can happen due to a poor match of client and therapist or if the therapist doesn't have the right qualifications and experience to treat the case.
It's important to work with a qualified and experienced therapist who is trained in hypnotherapy techniques and to communicate any concerns or side effects you experience to your therapist.
Hypnotherapy is considered a safe therapy, but it is not without risks. Therefore it is important to have a clear and realistic understanding of the potential benefits and risks of hypnotherapy before deciding to undertake it as a treatment.
