Overcoming Sadness and Depression Naturally: My Journey to Happiness and Health

This is a contributed article.

Is there a natural way to overcome sadness and depression without the use of medication or other external methods? Absolutely! I transformed my life from being depressed, 50 pounds overweight, and suffering from crippling social anxiety to being happy, fit, and socially active—all through natural solutions. Here are the four steps I took to achieve this transformation, all without medication.

Step 1: Joined Reality

The first step was to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse myself in real-life experiences. I deleted TikTok, Instagram, and turned off YouTube recommendations. I also quit playing video games and stopped watching porn. This was not easy, but quitting cold turkey was essential for me to see real results. As a result, I became more engaged in my own life, joining a jiu-jitsu gym, travelling the world, and even starting a running club that now boasts over 30 members.

Step 2: Became Self-Educated

Education doesn't end when you finish college. Realising that the only limit in life is what you know, I embraced continuous learning. Progressing towards new skills and goals brought immense happiness. I began reading 1-3 books a week, listening to audiobooks and podcasts, and learning new skills. For example, I picked up the harmonica and became deeply involved in jiu-jitsu. In one year, I went from reading no books to reading 70. This constant learning and growth have been incredibly fulfilling.

Step 3: Took on More Responsibility

Humans seek meaning, and we become depressed when we can't find it. Inspired by Dr. Jordan Peterson's idea of taking ultimate responsibility, I started taking charge of my life and the world around me. By being responsible for myself and my surroundings, meaning naturally followed. For instance, consider a new mother who finds immense meaning in caring for her baby despite life's uncertainties. Taking responsibility for your actions and environment can similarly bring profound meaning to your life.

Step 4: Became Fit

Fitness goes beyond "look good, feel good." I started going to the gym 3-5 times a week and doing regular cardio. Additionally, I focused on a clean, simple diet with no more than 12 ingredients. My diet includes eggs, milk, butter, steak, bananas, honey, lamb, chicken, coffee, and occasionally nuts or berries. This approach eliminated acne, reduced puffiness, and kept my energy levels high. Coupled with regular exercise, this diet has helped me achieve a physique that feels incredible. I also prioritise getting plenty of sunlight and quality sleep, taking 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily if sunlight is scarce.

These four steps require time and willpower to implement, but they have made a world of difference in my life. Changing your lifestyle drastically is challenging, but unlike medications that only treat symptoms, these steps address the root causes of depression. The effort is undoubtedly worth it for a healthier, happier life.
